Keep Your Tools Safe From Theives

November 6th, 2009

For the professional travelling workman, a van in which they can keep all their tools and belongings is an absolute necessity. An alternative to this is an open bed truck although these leave a lot to be desired in terms of security.A van is going to be the best all round solution although the safety of your tools is still guaranteed.  To significantly decrease your chances of theft you should purchase a quality locking van tool box.But how do you go about installing such a tool box inside your van?

You should begin by measuring out the length and width of the van bed before you purchase your secure tool box.  Bear in mind that you get what you pay for so if that tool box deal in the shop looks too good to be true then it probably is.  Plastic tool boxes in particular can become deformed over time if exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.A steel tool xan box is recommended for heavier loads but bear in mind how the van door will open in order to make access to your tools easier.

Decide where you want to locate the box inside your van.The most commonly used place is directly behind the cab.If you purchase a lift drawer box then make sure that you can lift the lid of the box without it interfering in any way with the back of the truck bed or the rear window.

Make sure you read the instructions that came with your toolbox so that you can determine what you’re going to need to do.Many van tool boxes require drilling but these tend to be poorer quality boxes. Most quality tool boxes will come with hardware and tools to attatch to the bed rails with j-bolt hardware.

When installing the kit make sure that all bolts are tightly fastened as you wouldn’t want to have spent all that cash on a secure tool kit and then not fastening it down securely!
